The heart behind Spaces and Places
"Children grow through the places we create and the relationships we nurture."
Over the years, I have come to believe that childhood is shaped not only by what children are taught, but by the everyday experiences they have, the relationships that surround them and the environments in which they grow.
Throughout my career as a teacher, educational leader, consultant and mental health practitioner, I have seen again and again that children thrive when they feel safe, connected and genuinely valued. When children experience belonging, trusting relationships and opportunities to actively participate in their world, they begin to develop the dispositions that support lifelong learning - curiosity, confidence, resilience, creativity, empathy and independence. These qualities not only support children in the early years, but continue to shape learning, wellbeing and relationships throughout life.

This understanding sits at the heart of Spaces and Places... Early Childhood. The name Spaces and Places reflects two interconnected ideas. Spaces are the moments, relationships and emotional experiences that shape children's inner worlds. Places are the environments we create, both physical and emotional, that invite children to explore, imagine, communicate and grow.
My intention is not to provide quick fixes or one-size-fits-all answers. Instead, this site offers reflections, practical ideas and gentle guidance to help families and educators create and adapt the conditions where children can naturally develop positive dispositions for learning and life. Whether you are looking for practical ideas to try immediately or opportunities to explore topics more deeply, my hope is that you will find encouragement, inspiration and thoughtful guidance, that you can apply to your own context and needs, throughout this site.

Grounded in contemporary early childhood research, professional experience and a deep respect for children as capable and competent learners, Spaces and Places aims to support the adults who walk alongside children each day. Sometimes it is the smallest changes in our interactions, expectations or environments that make the greatest difference in a child's sense of self, wellbeing and lifelong love of learning.
